Navigating California probate paperwork can be challenging. Court documents include extensive information, and key details are not always easy to find. This guide explains how to locate your probate case number and hearing date, helping you track your case and meet important deadlines.
Where to Find Case Information
Petition for Probate (Form DE-111)
In many California probate cases, DE-111 is the document used to start the probate proceeding.
- Court Name: Top of page 1
- Case Number: Upper right corner of page 1
- Hearing Date / Time / Department: Right side of page 1, typically in the middle section
- Petitioner’s Name: Section 2 on page 1
These details identify the probate case and tell you when the first hearing is scheduled.
Attorney-Drafted Pleadings (Objections, Supplements, Ex Partes, etc.)
If an attorney files documents in the case, the information is usually located in the caption section on the first page.
Look for:
-
Case Number: First page, right side of the document
-
Hearing Date, Time, and Department: First page, typically in the lower caption section
Most court filings follow this same general format.
Why This Information Matters
Finding these details can make the probate process much easier to manage. When you know where to look, it becomes simpler to follow the case and keep your records organized. For example, you may need this information to:
- Confirm the correct probate case number
- Check upcoming hearing dates and deadlines
- Provide accurate case details when speaking with attorneys or the court
- Review the court’s Register of Action (ROA)
Having this information readily available can help avoid confusion and keep you informed about the progress of the case.
